“Shadow Play”: References and Inspirations
I didn’t want the episode to be a series of visual quotes, but at the same time I wanted to makes sure people knew what I was doing and why. Here are some visual references and how they morphed into Pretty Little Liars
The Long Voyage Home (1940)
Cat People (1942)
The Lady From Shanghai (1947)
The Big Combo (1955)
The Narrow Margin (1952) is the movie playing on the television in the Hastings kitchen when Spencer enters and escapes the black-and-white world. I picked it because it’s not a particularly well known movie and I didn’t want something instantly recognizable on the screen. But now, people are finding hidden clues about Pretty Little Liars in my choice of movie. What strange psychological forces worked to shape my decision?
