Dressing Up For Halloween

This is going to get me in trouble, so I’ll just come out and say it:  The Halloween costumes worn by the Pretty Little Liars represent different slices of those parts of my brain dedicated to movies...which is most of my brain, come to think of it

Hanna wears costume designer Mandi Line’s reinterpretation of what is probably the most famous dress in the history of the movies, Marilyn Monroe’s white halter outfit from The Seven Year Itch.

Aria is ostensibly Daisy from The Great Gatsby, but that was just a literary excuse to dress her in something intensely glamourous from the 1920s, inspired by the movie stars of the era such as Louise Brooks.

Another era, another kind of glamour.  Spencer represents what I called in the script, “every femme fatale from every movie Warner Bros. ever made.”  Slinky and not to be trifled with, like Ava Gardner in The Killers.

Emily’s costume was selected months before there was a script.  It came out of an on set conversation I had with Shay in which we discovered our mutual affection for Jane Fonda’s sexy and lovingly cheesy 60’s Sci-Fi movie Barbarella.

I wasn’t going to pass up an opportunity like this and Mandi Line did an amazing job recreating the costume and making it uniquely Emily’s.

Paige is in the only costume I didn’t select.  This was handpicked by I. Marlene King who wanted Paige to be dressed as her name sake, Marlene Dietrich.

Jenna gets to be a sexy little pirate because I’ve wanted to put an eye patch on the character since she got her sight back.

I couldn’t convince the other writers to go along with the idea, but I got my big  chance at Halloween.

Return to Welcome.

The Ghost Train itself.
